Hyundai Palisade Reliability & Common Problems

The Hyundai Palisade is a three-row SUV sold since the 2020 model year and redesigned for 2026. Its owner complaints don't point to one defect that runs through every year: the earlier models are dominated by seat belts that unlatch, cracked windshields and oil use, while the 2023 to 2025 models are dominated by brake complaints. The 2024 is the one year our method marks as a year to avoid.

Reliability

Is the Hyundai Palisade Reliable?

The Palisade's record changes noticeably from one model year to the next, so it's more useful to talk about groups of years than about the model as a whole. In the 2020 to 2022 models, the complaint that stands out is seat belts that fail to latch or come undone while driving, which NHTSA investigated and which led to a recall covering every first-generation year. The 2020 also draws many complaints about windshields cracking with little or no impact and about the engine burning oil, and the 2020 to 2022 models share a park-outside recall for a fire risk in the trailer hitch wiring.

From 2023 to 2025 the picture shifts to brakes, and this is the most serious pattern on the page. Owners describe the brake pedal sinking or the vehicle not stopping as expected, and separately the anti-lock brakes kicking in over bumps or potholes so that the vehicle takes longer to stop. Both are safety-critical, both are reported very early in ownership, and in the 2024 they make up a third of all complaints, which is why that year is the one to avoid. Only the brake booster recall for the 2023 addresses part of this; no recall for these model years covers the anti-lock behavior owners describe.

Some problems arrive late and some early, which matters when you look at a particular vehicle. Windshield cracks are typically reported within the first few thousand miles, while oil consumption complaints cluster around 90,000 miles, so a low-mileage 2020 or 2021 may not have shown it yet. Rear shock failures and stalling sit in between. For the brake, anti-lock and oil problems, owners who describe a repair rarely say it fixed the problem, though complaints lean toward repairs that failed, so this can't tell you how often repairs worked overall.

The redesigned 2026 is too new to judge with much confidence. It has fewer complaints, partly because it has been on the road for a shorter time, and none of them point to a serious recurring defect so far; the most common is power seats that don't stop when something is in the way, which has a recall. Across all years, keep the limits in mind: complaint counts reflect how many Palisades were sold and how long they've been driven, not how likely any one vehicle is to fail, and a single complaint can describe more than one problem.

Common problems

Most Common Hyundai Palisade Problems

Across the 2020–2026 Palisade (2,441 complaints researched). A complaint can describe more than one problem, so these counts overlap.

  1. Seat belts unlatch or won't latch

    Serious

    239 complaints · 10% of all researchedmedian 34,000 mi

Owners describe front or second-row seat belts that won't latch, or that come undone while the vehicle is moving. It's a safety problem because an unlatched belt gives no protection in a crash. It is reported across the 2020 to 2025 models, most in the 2021 and 2022, and recall 25V607000 covers the buckles on all of those years.

  2. Brakes ineffective or ABS kicks in over bumps

    Critical

    226 complaints · 9% of all researchedmedian 1,900 mi

The anti-lock brakes activate when the vehicle rolls over a bump, pothole or rough patch while braking, and owners say the vehicle then takes noticeably longer to stop. It is reported only on the 2023 to 2025 models, typically within the first few thousand miles, and these model years have no recall for it.

  3. Brake pedal sinks or brakes fail

    Critical

    219 complaints · 9% of all researchedmedian 7,000 mi

Owners describe the brake pedal sinking, feeling wrong or the brakes not stopping the vehicle as expected, sometimes alongside phantom automatic emergency braking. It is concentrated in the 2023 to 2025 models and peaks in the 2024. Recall 23V415000, a brake booster vacuum leak, covers the 2023 only.

  4. Windshield cracks easily

    Serious

    193 complaints · 8% of all researchedmedian 3,500 mi

The windshield cracks from small stones or with no visible impact, and some cracks spread quickly. It's a visibility and repair nuisance rather than a crash risk, and some owners say it happened within days of buying the vehicle. It is reported mostly on the 2020 and 2021, usually early in ownership, and there is no recall for it.

  5. Engine burns oil

    Serious

    139 complaints · 6% of all researchedmedian 90,000 mi

The engine uses oil faster than expected and can run low between oil changes, often without a low-oil warning; some owners describe loss of power or engine failure. It is reported almost only on the 2020 to 2022 models and mostly at high mileage, so check oil level and service records on any higher-mileage example of those years. There is no recall for it.

  6. Stalling or shutting off while driving

    Critical

    129 complaints · 5% of all researchedmedian 72,300 mi

The engine shuts off while driving, often with warning lights. It is reported in small numbers across every year, most often on the 2020, and owners rarely say a repair fixed it. No Palisade recall addresses it, and the complaints don't establish a cause.

  7. Sunroof glass shatters

    Serious

    128 complaints · 5% of all researchedmedian 17,300 mi

The sunroof glass breaks suddenly with no outside impact, often with a loud bang and glass falling into the cabin. It is reported on every first-generation year, most in the 2022 and 2023, and there is no recall for it.

  8. Rear shock failure

    Serious

    111 complaints · 5% of all researchedmedian 45,000 mi

The rear shock absorbers wear out early, become noisy or leak, and owners often say replacements failed again. It is mostly a comfort and handling issue rather than a safety one. It is reported most on the 2020, typically at moderate to high mileage.

Years to avoid

Hyundai Palisade Years to Avoid

Our method marks only the 2024 as a year to avoid, because a third of its complaints describe brake problems. The 2023 has the same brake problems at a lower share and is marked check carefully. The 2020 to 2022 and the 2025 are marked check the recall was done, because each has a park-outside or seat belt recall that matters more than its complaint pattern. The 2026 shows no pattern of serious problems so far.

Recalls

Hyundai Palisade Recalls

Several Palisade recalls carry a park-outside warning for a fire risk: the trailer hitch wiring on the 2020 to 2022, and the transmission oil pump controller on the 2023 to 2025. The seat belt buckle recall covers every first-generation year. Check any Palisade's VIN for open recalls before you buy; a Hyundai dealer does recall repairs free.

FAQ

Hyundai Palisade Questions

Is the Hyundai Palisade reliable?

It depends on the model year. The 2024 has serious known problems, mainly brakes, and the 2023 and 2025 share those brake complaints at a lower share. The 2020 to 2022 are judged mainly on their recalls: seat belts that unlatch and a park-outside fire risk in the trailer hitch wiring. The 2026 shows no pattern of serious problems so far but is still new.

What are the most common Hyundai Palisade problems?

Across the seven model years we researched, owners most often describe seat belts that won't latch or come undone, brakes that don't stop the vehicle as expected, the anti-lock brakes kicking in over bumps, cracked windshields and the engine burning oil. Which of these you're likely to meet depends heavily on the model year.

Which Hyundai Palisade years have brake problems?

Brake complaints are concentrated in the 2023 to 2025 models and peak in the 2024. Earlier years have only a handful. The anti-lock problem over bumps appears only in the 2023 to 2025.

Is there a seat belt recall on the Hyundai Palisade?

Yes. Recall 25V607000 covers seat belt buckles that may fail to latch on the 2020 to 2025 models. The 2026 has a separate recall for the third-row seat belt buckle. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether a specific vehicle still needs the repair.

Has the 2026 Hyundai Palisade fixed the older problems?

It's too early to say. The 2026 is a new generation with fewer complaints so far, partly because it has been on the road for less time, and those complaints don't show a serious recurring defect yet. That can change as more owners report problems.
