In short

Some known problems

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade has some known problems: NHTSA investigated inadvertent seat belt unlatch (PE24021) and closed it with recall 25V607, which matches the most common complaint. NHTSA has 309 owner complaints, and 11 report a crash, fire, injury or death. Seat belts, shattering sunroof glass and windshield cracks lead the list, and there are 5 recalls.

Reliability

How Reliable Is the 2022 Hyundai Palisade?

This model year has the verdict "Some known problems" because of its seat belts. NHTSA investigated inadvertent seat belt unlatch and closed that investigation with recall 25V607, and seat belt complaints are the largest group for this model year, about 1 in 5 owner complaints. Owners describe belts that come undone by themselves, mostly while driving, and belts that are hard to latch. That is a safety problem, because a belt that releases does not protect an occupant in a crash. Most other complaints are less central to safety, but a few are alarming.

The second-largest group is sunroof glass that shatters, about 11% of complaints. Owners describe a loud bang, often compared to a gunshot, with no impact, sometimes on the highway, and some say glass fell into the cabin. This model year has no recall for it. Windshield cracking, coolant or radiator leaks, rear shock failure and stalling each make up about 5% of complaints. Stalling is the most worrying of these: owners describe the engine shutting off at speed or when slowing to a stop, and one reports impaired braking. These problems do not appear to be linked, so each one is a separate thing to check.

Two recalls match the seat belt complaints. Recall 25V607 says the seat belt buckles in the driver, passenger and second-row window seats may fail to latch, and until the remedy is done it advises inserting the belt firmly and pulling on it to confirm it is secured. Some owners also describe third-row belts that do not latch or come undone, and recall 26V034 covers third-row side curtain air bags that may deploy improperly in a crash, with dealers installing a protective film over the rear window and removing padding as necessary. There is no recall for the shattering sunroof, windshield cracking, stalling, coolant leaks or rear shocks. Too few owners say whether repairs worked to draw a conclusion, but among those who do, complaints lean toward repairs that failed, especially for rear shocks and stalling.

Few owners give a mileage, so patterns are rough. The sunroof and windshield complaints that include mileage come very early, around 8,000 miles for the sunroof and under 2,000 for the windshield. Seat belt and coolant complaints that include mileage cluster in the low-to-mid 20,000s, and rear shock complaints come around 41,700 miles. The few stalling reports that include mileage are at about 82,700 miles. On a particular vehicle, a low odometer reading does not rule out these problems, and a high one does not mean the sunroof or windshield are safe from them.

If you are shopping, treat the seat belts as the first thing to verify: confirm recall 25V607 was completed and test each belt. Ask whether the sunroof glass or windshield was ever replaced. Complaint counts show what owners reported, not how many vehicles are affected, and they cannot show how any one vehicle was maintained or driven. A vehicle with the recalls completed and a clean inspection history is a better bet than one with an unknown record.

Buying one

Should you buy a used 2022 Hyundai Palisade?

What to check before you buy, based on the complaint and recall data.

Before you buy, check that recalls 25V607 (seat belt buckles) and 26V034 (third-row curtain air bags) have been done, and ask for the dealer record. Test every seat belt in every seat, including the third row, several times. Look closely at the sunroof glass and the windshield for chips or cracks, and ask whether either has been replaced.

  1. 1Run the VIN for open recalls. NHTSA lists 5 recalls, and 1 carries a do-not-drive or park-outside warning (22V633000). Check at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  2. 2Test-drive for stalling. It's the most common safety-critical complaint, in about 1 in 19 owner complaints, usually around 82,700 miles.
  3. 3Check for seat belt unlatching. The most common complaint, in about 1 in 5 owner complaints.
  4. 4Get a pre-purchase inspection. An independent mechanic can spot leaks, stored fault codes and accident repairs that a test drive misses.

Owning one

If you already own one

Find your symptom, see when problems tend to show up, and check which recalls apply.

If a seat belt comes undone while driving or a warning chime sounds, pull the belt tight after buckling and have a dealer check it; owners report this happening mostly while driving. Confirm recalls 25V607, 26V034 and 22V633 have been performed. Until the tow hitch recall 22V633 is repaired, the recall advises parking outside and away from structures. If the engine shuts off or you notice coolant smell or a low coolant warning, stop driving and get it inspected.

72 problems found in all 309 complaints. One complaint can describe more than one problem, so counts add up to more than the total. Not counted as a defect: 30 about recall paperwork or parts delays, 2 describing no vehicle defect. Typical miles, repair cost and fix rate show only when enough owners report them.
