In short
Some known problemsThe 2022 Kia Telluride has some known problems, mainly because a park-outside recall covers a fire risk in the trailer hitch module. NHTSA has 324 owner complaints, and 19 report a crash, fire, injury or death. The most common are cracking windshields, a blank instrument cluster and sunroof glass that shatters. It has 7 recalls.
Reliability
How Reliable Is the 2022 Kia Telluride?
This model year is rated Some known problems. The verdict rests on a park-outside recall for a fire risk in the trailer hitch module, not on a pattern in the owner complaints alone. Among the 324 complaints, three problems dominate: windshields that crack easily, an instrument cluster display that goes blank, and sunroof glass that shatters. Of these, the windshield cracking is by far the largest, at about 1 in 3 complaints. Most complaints describe defects, and a small number are about recalls or other matters.
The three problems are different in kind. Windshield complaints mostly describe cracks that start from a small pebble or with no visible impact, then spread. A few owners describe the crack growing within hours. The sunroof complaints are more alarming: owners describe a loud bang while driving, often on the freeway, with glass and rain falling in, and some say glass landed on occupants. The blank cluster is different again. Owners say the screen stays dark at startup or goes black at random, and a few add that driver assist features stopped working or that they could not see mileage or fuel. These do not appear to be linked to each other.
Recalls cover only part of this. The instrument cluster has two: 21V577000, where the LCD display screen may remain blank after startup and the fix is a software update, and 22V344000, where excess adhesive in a circuit board may leave the display blank and dealers replace the cluster assembly. Some owners say the blank screen came back or was only partly fixed, but too few repair reports are available to say how often. This model year has no recall for windshield cracking or for the sunroof glass. Separate recalls cover a seat motor that may overheat and cause a fire, with a park-outside warning, and a driveshaft that may not be fully engaged, which can allow roll away in PARK.
Mileage reports are limited. Only 24 owners gave a mileage, with a median of about 34,000 miles and 33% under 25,000 miles. That suggests problems can show up early, and some owners describe windshield cracks and blank clusters soon after purchase. Too few owners reported mileage for any single problem to say when it typically appears. A low odometer reading therefore does not rule out these problems on a used example.
If you are shopping for one, check the recall history first, then inspect the glass and test the cluster on several cold starts. Keep in mind the limits of the evidence. Complaint counts show what owners reported, not how many vehicles are affected, and they cannot show how a particular vehicle was maintained or driven. Windshield complaints in particular may also reflect owners being more likely to report an issue that is easy to see.

Buying one
Should you buy a used 2022 Kia Telluride?
What to check before you buy, based on the complaint and recall data.
Before buying, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm every recall was completed, especially the park-outside fire recalls for the trailer hitch module and the front power seat motor. Ask whether the windshield or sunroof has ever been replaced, and look at the glass for chips and cracks. Start the vehicle several times and check that the instrument cluster lights up every time.
- 1Run the VIN for open recalls. NHTSA lists 7 recalls, and 3 carry a do-not-drive or park-outside warning (26V430000, 24V407000, 22V626000). Check at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- 2Check for windshield cracking. The most common complaint, in about 1 in 3 owner complaints.
- 3Get a pre-purchase inspection. An independent mechanic can spot leaks, stored fault codes and accident repairs that a test drive misses.

Owning one
If you already own one
Find your symptom, see when problems tend to show up, and check which recalls apply.
Watch for a windshield crack that grows without an obvious impact, a cluster screen that stays black at startup, and any loud bang from the sunroof. If a park-outside recall applies to your vehicle, park away from structures until the repair is done. Confirm with a dealer that the recall repairs, including the instrument cluster ones, have been completed.

NHTSA gives the 2022 Kia Telluride 5 out of 5 stars overall, with 4 out of 5 stars for frontal crash, 5 out of 5 stars for side crash and 4 out of 5 stars for rollover. The ratings are the same for the AWD and FWD versions. Of the 324 complaints, 19 report a crash, fire, injury or death.
What should I check before buying a 2022 Kia Telluride?
Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm every recall was completed, especially the park-outside fire recalls for the trailer hitch module and the front power seat motor. Ask whether the windshield or sunroof has been replaced, look for chips and cracks in the glass, and start the vehicle several times to check the instrument cluster lights up each time.
Which Kia Telluride years should you avoid?
Avoid the 2025 Kia Telluride: owner complaints for that year show serious known problems. For the 2020–2024, make sure the recall repairs were done: an urgent recall matters more than their complaint pattern. The 2027 has too few complaints to judge. Every model year is compared on the Kia Telluride years-to-avoid page.
Methodology
How we researched this
- Complaints. NHTSA's owner complaint file, counted as unique complaint numbers for make KIA, model TELLURIDE, model year 2022. Data through Oct 4, 2026.
- Verdict. Judged from this model year's own complaints, not against other models, using shares rather than counts. Serious known problems: one serious problem (transmission, engine or stalling, steering, brakes, airbags, fire, fuel leaks) is in a quarter or more of complaints; or a smaller but clear cluster comes with an unusual share of crash, fire, injury or loss-of-power reports or early failures; or an urgent recall or NHTSA investigation matches a top complaint. Some known problems: one of those signals on its own. No pattern of serious problems: none of them; this doesn't mean the vehicle is trouble-free. Too few complaints to judge: under 50 complaints. Why this verdict: A park-outside recall (22V626000) for a fire risk in the trailer hitches, matching a top complaint.
- No grade or class ranking. Raw complaint counts favor models that sell fewer cars, so we don't score or rank this vehicle against other models until we can adjust for sales.
- Trouble spots and history. Complaints grouped by the part owners chose when filing. The history grid counts complaints filed in each model year's first 3 years so older and newer years compare fairly; years with fewer than 3 complete years are marked too new.
- Named problems. Every one of the 324 complaints was researched and classified by its problems, severity, symptoms, repairs and any cost the owner mentions; the counts, costs and fix rates on this page are tallies of those classifications. Quotes are verbatim excerpts, checked against the original text. Engines are decoded from partial VINs with NHTSA's vPIC service.
- Repair costs and fix rates. Shown only when at least 10 owners report a repair cost, or at least 10 complaints describe whether a repair worked.
- Not adjusted for sales. Not affiliated with NHTSA. Page updated Oct 11, 2026.
