In short

Serious known problems

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee has serious known problems: 88 owner complaints (53%) describe transmission and drivetrain trouble, including power transfer unit failures and the transmission dropping into neutral. NHTSA has 166 owner complaints, and 14 report a crash, fire, injury or death. Stalling while driving is the next most common problem. There are 4 recalls.

Reliability

How Reliable Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee?

The 2021 Cherokee is rated as having serious known problems because most of its owner complaints point to one area. More than half describe transmission and drivetrain trouble: power transfer unit failures, the transmission dropping into neutral, and delayed engagement when pulling away. These are safety-critical, because owners describe losing drive power while moving, some of them on busy highways or in snow. This is not a case of annoying rattles or trim faults.

The biggest single problem is failure of the power transfer unit, the 4WD part named in nearly half of all complaints. Owners typically first see a Service 4WD light or message, or a 4WD system unavailable message, and some then report jerking, no traction or a complete loss of power. A second, smaller problem is stalling or shutting off while driving, reported in about 1 in 10 complaints, sometimes at a red light or intersection and sometimes at 55 to 60 mph. Some stalling reports mention the PTU recall, but that recall's defect text covers only the PTU, so stalling has no recall of its own for this model year.

Recall 26V290000, issued in May 2026, says the PTU may fail. The remedy is that dealers update the drivetrain control module, PTU and electronic park brake software, and replace the PTU as necessary, free of charge. Because it was issued years after the vehicle was sold, a used 2021 Cherokee may not have had it done yet. Among owners who described the outcome of a PTU repair, the results were mixed: 4 said it fixed the problem, 2 said partly, and 4 said it did not. Complaints lean toward repairs that failed, and one owner reports a PTU replaced twice that failed again. Owners who reported a repair cost for the PTU put the typical figure at about $2,500. A separate recall, 21V310000, covers a transmission oil cooler hose that may have been incorrectly cured, allowing transmission fluid to leak. The recall fix is for dealers to inspect and replace the hose.

Mileage is a useful check. PTU complaints that include an odometer reading cluster between about 45,000 and 74,000 miles, with a typical report near 62,000 miles. Stalling reports are spread widely, from very low mileage to about 73,000 miles, so a low odometer is no protection. Across all mileage reports for this model year, the typical figure is about 49,000 miles. A Cherokee in or near the 45,000 to 74,000 mile range deserves extra scrutiny for 4WD warnings and recall completion.

If you are shopping for one, treat proof that the PTU recall work was completed as a condition of buying, and have a dealer confirm the open recalls by VIN. Complaint counts show what owners chose to report to NHTSA, not how many vehicles are affected, and they cannot show how any particular vehicle was driven or maintained. A well-documented vehicle may be fine, but the pattern of reports is serious enough that you should verify before you buy.

Buying one

Should you buy a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?

What to check before you buy, based on the complaint and recall data.

Ask the seller for the service history and check whether the power transfer unit (PTU) recall, 26V290000, has been completed, since dealers update software and replace the PTU as necessary at no charge. Test drive on a highway and from a stop, and watch for a Service 4WD message, jerking or hesitation when pulling away. Walk away from a vehicle that shows those warnings and has no repair record.

  1. 1Run the VIN for open recalls. NHTSA lists 4 recalls. Check at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  2. 2Test-drive for power transfer unit (PTU) or 4WD failure. It's the most common safety-critical complaint, in nearly half of owner complaints, usually around 62,000 miles.
  3. 3Get a pre-purchase inspection. An independent mechanic can spot leaks, stored fault codes and accident repairs that a test drive misses.

Owning one

If you already own one

Find your symptom, see when problems tend to show up, and check which recalls apply.

A Service 4WD light or message, jerking, or a loss of drive power are signs to act on, not to ignore. Several owners describe the vehicle losing power while driving on a highway, so get it checked promptly and avoid high-speed roads until it is. Confirm with a Jeep dealer that recall 26V290000 and the transmission oil cooler hose recall, 21V310000, were done on your vehicle.

FAQ

2021 Jeep Cherokee questions

Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee reliable?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee has serious known problems. 53% of its complaints (88) describe transmission problems, including power transfer unit (PTU) or 4WD failure, the transmission dropping into neutral and delayed engagement pulling away. NHTSA has 166 owner complaints for this model year, and 14 report a crash, fire, injury or death.

What are the most common 2021 Jeep Cherokee problems?

The most common problem is power transfer unit (PTU) or 4WD failure, with 76 complaints (46%), nearly half of all owner complaints. Stalling or shutting off while driving is next, with 17 complaints, about 1 in 10. Owners describe a Service 4WD light or message, jerking, and in some cases a sudden loss of power while driving.

How many recalls does the 2021 Jeep Cherokee have?

They cover a power transfer unit that may fail (26V290000), an improperly secured right-side curtain air bag connector (24V516000), a transmission oil cooler hose that may leak fluid (21V310000) and front lower control arms that may fracture (20V657000). Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Does the 2021 Jeep Cherokee have power transfer unit (PTU) problems?

Yes, PTU or 4WD failure is the biggest complaint, with 76 complaints (46%), and it is a critical problem. Owners describe a Service 4WD light or message, a 4WD system unavailable message, jerking and no traction, and some report a complete loss of power while driving. Recall 26V290000 says the PTU may fail; dealers update software and replace the PTU as necessary, free of charge.

At what mileage do 2021 Jeep Cherokee PTU problems appear?

In 25 reports that include mileage, PTU or 4WD failure shows up at a typical 62,000 miles, with half falling between about 45,000 and 74,000 miles. Stalling reports are spread from very low mileage to about 73,000 miles. Across all mileage reports for this model year, the typical figure is about 49,000 miles.

Separately, 14 of 166 owner complaints report a crash, fire, injury or death, and some owners describe losing drive power while moving.

Methodology

How we researched this

  • Complaints. NHTSA's owner complaint file, counted as unique complaint numbers for make JEEP, model CHEROKEE, model year 2021. Data through Oct 4, 2026.
  • Verdict. Judged from this model year's own complaints, not against other models, using shares rather than counts. Serious known problems: one serious problem (transmission, engine or stalling, steering, brakes, airbags, fire, fuel leaks) is in a quarter or more of complaints; or a smaller but clear cluster comes with an unusual share of crash, fire, injury or loss-of-power reports or early failures; or an urgent recall or NHTSA investigation matches a top complaint. Some known problems: one of those signals on its own. No pattern of serious problems: none of them; this doesn't mean the vehicle is trouble-free. Too few complaints to judge: under 50 complaints. Why this verdict: 53% of complaints (88) describe transmission problems (power transfer unit (PTU) or 4WD failure, the transmission dropping into neutral, delayed engagement pulling away).
  • No grade or class ranking. Raw complaint counts favor models that sell fewer cars, so we don't score or rank this vehicle against other models until we can adjust for sales.
  • Trouble spots and history. Complaints grouped by the part owners chose when filing. The history grid counts complaints filed in each model year's first 3 years so older and newer years compare fairly; years with fewer than 3 complete years are marked too new.
  • Named problems. Every one of the 166 complaints was researched and classified by its problems, severity, symptoms, repairs and any cost the owner mentions; the counts, costs and fix rates on this page are tallies of those classifications. Quotes are verbatim excerpts, checked against the original text. Engines are decoded from partial VINs with NHTSA's vPIC service.
  • Repair costs and fix rates. Shown only when at least 10 owners report a repair cost, or at least 10 complaints describe whether a repair worked.
  • Not adjusted for sales. Not affiliated with NHTSA. Page updated Nov 5, 2026.
