In short
Serious known problemsThe 2020 Jeep Cherokee has serious known problems: 54% of its owner complaints (168) describe transmission problems, including power transfer unit failures and the transmission dropping into neutral. NHTSA has 309 owner complaints, and 15 report a crash, fire, injury or death. The most common are power transfer unit or 4WD failure, loss of drive while moving and stalling, and the model year has 3 recalls.
Reliability
How Reliable Is the 2020 Jeep Cherokee?
This model year has serious known problems, and the reason is clear. More than half of its owner complaints, 54%, describe transmission problems: power transfer unit failures, the transmission dropping into neutral, and harsh, jerky shifting. These are not minor annoyances. Most of the top problems are safety-critical because they can take away drive power, engine power or steering control while the vehicle is moving.
The biggest single problem is power transfer unit (PTU) or 4WD failure, which makes up about half of all complaints. Owners most often describe a Service 4WD light or message, then a failed PTU, sometimes with grinding or jerking. A related group says the vehicle dropped into neutral or lost drive on the highway, and many of those owners also point to the PTU or transfer case. Stalling, the electronic parking brake engaging by itself and loss of power steering are smaller groups, but they describe sudden events at speed, and some owners report these together with PTU trouble.
One of the three recalls speaks directly to the biggest problem. Recall 26V290000 says the power transfer unit (PTU) may fail, and the fix is that dealers will update the Drivetrain Control Module, PTU and Electronic Park Brake software, and replace the PTU, as necessary, free of charge. A second recall, 19V637000, says the steering rack gear may break, possibly causing a loss of steering control, and dealers will replace the steering gear. This model year has no recall that names stalling or loss of drive in neutral. Where owners reported how PTU repairs went, 9 of 17 said the repair fixed it and 7 said it did not, and complaints lean toward repairs that failed. Owners who reported an amount for PTU work gave a median of $3,065.
Mileage matters here. PTU problems are typically reported around 65,000 miles, with the middle half of reports between 48,800 and 82,800 miles. Loss of drive while moving shows up at a similar point, around 62,600 miles. So a Cherokee with low or average mileage has not necessarily passed the risk, and one with 50,000 to 80,000 miles is right in the range where owners report trouble. Stalling reports include both very early and mid-range mileage, so the odometer is no guide to it.
For a buyer, the practical steps are to confirm the recalls were done, ask for PTU service history, and test drive at highway speed. Remember the limits of this evidence. Complaint counts show what owners reported to NHTSA, not how many vehicles are affected, and they cannot show how any particular vehicle was driven or maintained. A vehicle with a clean history may be fine, but these complaints are serious enough to check carefully before you buy.

Buying one
Should you buy a used 2020 Jeep Cherokee?
What to check before you buy, based on the complaint and recall data.
Before buying a 2020 Cherokee, check with a Jeep dealer that recall 26V290000, the power transfer unit (PTU) recall, has been done, and ask for the repair paperwork. Test drive at highway speed and watch for a Service 4WD light, grinding, jerking or any loss of drive. Ask whether the PTU has already been replaced, because owners report PTU problems after the dealer visit too. Also confirm the steering gear recall 19V637000 was handled if the vehicle falls under it.
- 1Run the VIN for open recalls. NHTSA lists 3 recalls. Check at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- 2Test-drive for power transfer unit (PTU) or 4WD failure. It's the most common safety-critical complaint, in nearly half of owner complaints, usually around 65,000 miles.
- 3Get a pre-purchase inspection. An independent mechanic can spot leaks, stored fault codes and accident repairs that a test drive misses.

Owning one
If you already own one
Find your symptom, see when problems tend to show up, and check which recalls apply.
Watch for a Service 4WD light or message, grinding sounds, jerking, or a loss of power while driving. Owners also describe the electronic parking brake applying by itself and the engine stalling at speed. If the vehicle loses drive, stalls, or the steering or brakes feel different, pull over safely and have it checked before driving on. Confirm with a dealer that recall 26V290000 has been completed, and keep every repair record.

75 problems found in all 309 complaints. One complaint can describe more than one problem, so counts add up to more than the total. Not counted as a defect: 5 about recall paperwork or parts delays, 1 describing no vehicle defect. Typical miles, repair cost and fix rate show only when enough owners report them.

Methodology
How we researched this
- Complaints. NHTSA's owner complaint file, counted as unique complaint numbers for make JEEP, model CHEROKEE, model year 2020. Data through Oct 4, 2026.
- Verdict. Judged from this model year's own complaints, not against other models, using shares rather than counts. Serious known problems: one serious problem (transmission, engine or stalling, steering, brakes, airbags, fire, fuel leaks) is in a quarter or more of complaints; or a smaller but clear cluster comes with an unusual share of crash, fire, injury or loss-of-power reports or early failures; or an urgent recall or NHTSA investigation matches a top complaint. Some known problems: one of those signals on its own. No pattern of serious problems: none of them; this doesn't mean the vehicle is trouble-free. Too few complaints to judge: under 50 complaints. Why this verdict: 54% of complaints (168) describe transmission problems (power transfer unit (PTU) or 4WD failure, loss of drive while moving, harsh, jerky shifting).
- No grade or class ranking. Raw complaint counts favor models that sell fewer cars, so we don't score or rank this vehicle against other models until we can adjust for sales.
- Trouble spots and history. Complaints grouped by the part owners chose when filing. The history grid counts complaints filed in each model year's first 3 years so older and newer years compare fairly; years with fewer than 3 complete years are marked too new.
- Named problems. Every one of the 309 complaints was researched and classified by its problems, severity, symptoms, repairs and any cost the owner mentions; the counts, costs and fix rates on this page are tallies of those classifications. Quotes are verbatim excerpts, checked against the original text. Engines are decoded from partial VINs with NHTSA's vPIC service.
- Repair costs and fix rates. Shown only when at least 10 owners report a repair cost, or at least 10 complaints describe whether a repair worked.
- Not adjusted for sales. Not affiliated with NHTSA. Page updated Nov 5, 2026.
