In short
Some known problemsThe 2018 Toyota RAV4 has some known problems: 27% of its owner complaints report a crash, fire, injury or death, or a loss of power while moving. NHTSA has 331 owner complaints, and 62 report a crash, fire, injury or death. The most common are stalling, vehicle fires and sunroof glass shattering. There are 3 recalls.
Reliability
How Reliable Is the 2018 Toyota RAV4?
This model year is rated Some known problems because 27% of its owner complaints report a crash, fire, injury or death, or a loss of power while moving. That is more than the typical share for vehicles we assess, and it is the reason for the verdict. The complaints are dominated by serious failures rather than annoyances. Stalling or shutting off while driving is the most common, followed by vehicle fires and sunroof glass that shatters on its own. Sudden or unintended acceleration is reported less often but is just as serious.
Several of these problems overlap. Many stalling complaints describe a charging system warning, hard restarts or a car that would not crank, and battery drain or no-start complaints describe the same kind of charging warning and failed starts. Some stalling and fire reports also mention smoke from the hood. If you are looking at one of these vehicles, treat a history of battery trouble, a charging warning and stalling as possibly one story, not three separate faults. The data does not say what ties them together, so a mechanic's inspection matters more than any one symptom.
One recall in this model year is relevant here. Recall 23V734000 says certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit. The fix is that dealers replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owners mention this recall in stalling, fire and battery complaints, with battery complaints mentioning it most. The two other recalls cover incorrect load carrying capacity labels and are not tied to the main problems. Sunroof glass shattering and sudden acceleration have no recall for this model year. Where owners describe repairs for stalling and battery problems, the few who report an outcome mostly say the repair did not fix it, and complaints in general lean toward repairs that failed.
Mileage patterns differ by problem. Sunroof glass failures are reported early, with a median around 7,300 miles and a quarter of reports at 4,000 miles or less. Stalling is reported at a median of about 18,300 miles, and battery problems later, around 40,000 miles. Fires are reported later still, with a median around 48,500 miles and a quarter of reports above 75,500 miles. So a low odometer does not rule out stalling or a shattered sunroof, and a higher one does not rule out a fire. Mileage alone will not tell you whether a particular vehicle is past these problems.
If you are buying, confirm the recall work, inspect the battery area and sunroof, and drive it in traffic before you commit. Keep the limits of this evidence in mind. Complaint counts show what owners reported, not how many vehicles are affected, and they cannot show how a particular vehicle was maintained. A clean-looking example may be fine, and a well-documented repair history is the best evidence you can ask a seller for.

Buying one
Should you buy a used 2018 Toyota RAV4?
What to check before you buy, based on the complaint and recall data.
Ask the seller for proof that recall 23V734000, the 12-volt battery recall, was completed, and check the battery and its tray for signs of poor fit. Test drive in stop-and-go traffic and listen for hesitation or a charging system warning when you lift off the gas. Look at the sunroof glass and ask whether it has ever been replaced. Have a mechanic check for any history of repeated battery replacement or stalling.
- 1Run the VIN for open recalls. NHTSA lists 3 recalls. Check at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- 2Test-drive for stalling while driving. It's the most common safety-critical complaint, in about 1 in 8 owner complaints, usually around 18,300 miles.
- 3Get a pre-purchase inspection. An independent mechanic can spot leaks, stored fault codes and accident repairs that a test drive misses.

Owning one
If you already own one
Find your symptom, see when problems tend to show up, and check which recalls apply.
Watch for a charging system warning, hard starting, sputtering, or the engine shutting off when you lift off the gas. Smoke or a burning smell from the hood is a reason to stop driving and get out of the vehicle. Confirm with a Toyota dealer that recall 23V734000 and the two label recalls have been done. If the vehicle surges forward on its own, or the sunroof makes a loud bang, report it to the dealer and to NHTSA.

103 problems found in all 331 complaints. One complaint can describe more than one problem, so counts add up to more than the total. Not counted as a defect: 57 about recall paperwork or parts delays, 10 describing no vehicle defect. Typical miles, repair cost and fix rate show only when enough owners report them.

Methodology
How we researched this
- Complaints. NHTSA's owner complaint file, counted as unique complaint numbers for make TOYOTA, model RAV4, model year 2018. Data through Oct 4, 2026.
- Verdict. Judged from this model year's own complaints, not against other models, using shares rather than counts. Serious known problems: one serious problem (transmission, engine or stalling, steering, brakes, airbags, fire, fuel leaks) is in a quarter or more of complaints; or a smaller but clear cluster comes with an unusual share of crash, fire, injury or loss-of-power reports or early failures; or an urgent recall or NHTSA investigation matches a top complaint. Some known problems: one of those signals on its own. No pattern of serious problems: none of them; this doesn't mean the vehicle is trouble-free. Too few complaints to judge: under 50 complaints. Why this verdict: 27% of complaints report a crash, fire, injury or death, or a loss of power while moving (typical: 17%).
- No grade or class ranking. Raw complaint counts favor models that sell fewer cars, so we don't score or rank this vehicle against other models until we can adjust for sales.
- Trouble spots and history. Complaints grouped by the part owners chose when filing. The history grid counts complaints filed in each model year's first 3 years so older and newer years compare fairly; years with fewer than 3 complete years are marked too new.
- Named problems. Every one of the 331 complaints was researched and classified by its problems, severity, symptoms, repairs and any cost the owner mentions; the counts, costs and fix rates on this page are tallies of those classifications. Quotes are verbatim excerpts, checked against the original text. Engines are decoded from partial VINs with NHTSA's vPIC service.
- Repair costs and fix rates. Shown only when at least 10 owners report a repair cost, or at least 10 complaints describe whether a repair worked.
- Not adjusted for sales. Not affiliated with NHTSA. Page updated Nov 5, 2026.
